Nestled in the mountainous landscapes of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai stands as a cultural and natural haven that beckons travelers from around the globe. This ancient city, surrounded by lush jungles and adorned with ornate temples, is a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic Thai experience. From vibrant night markets and delectable street food to serene elephant sanctuaries and historic temples, Chiang Mai offers a diverse range of experiences that captivate the senses. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the best areas to stay, the top 5 things to do, the enchanting Chai Lai Orchid Elephant Sanctuary, the vibrant night markets, the delectable local food scene, practical tips for getting there, and the optimal time of year to embark on this Thai adventure. Best Place to Stay Choosing the right area and place to stay in Chiang Mai depends on your preferences and the type of experience you seek. The Old City, with its ancient temples and historical charm, is a popular choice for those who want to be immersed in Chiang Mai’s rich cultural heritage. Nimmanhaemin Road, or Nimman as locals call it, is a trendy and modern area known for its hip cafes, boutiques, and vibrant nightlife. If you prefer a more tranquil atmosphere, the Riverside area offers a peaceful retreat with picturesque views of the Ping River. For me, I spun the wheel and chose Baan U Sabai Boutique House based on its unique old world charm. Admittedly, the location is odd with being close to the airport but I ended up having the most comfortable and peaceful stay. I was able to get out and explore while having this garden oasis to come back to. Check out this King Room I stayed in overlooking the pool/courtyard area! If you’re looking for a blend of local life and expat communities, the neighborhood of Santitham provides a laid-back environment with a mix of markets, cafes, and residential streets. Finally, the foothills of Doi Suthep, an iconic mountain overlooking the city, offer a serene escape with stunning views and easy access to the renowned temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Each area has its unique appeal, ensuring that there’s something for every traveler’s taste and preference. Top 5 Things to Do: Explore the Old City and Temples The heart of Chiang Mai lies within its Old City walls, where ancient temples and historic structures transport visitors back in time. Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Chiang Man are just a few of the many temples that showcase the city’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Take a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets, absorb the intricate details of the architecture, and experience the spiritual atmosphere that permeates these sacred grounds. I found the Tha Phae Gate in it’s original glory! Further along I stumbled into the Wat Pan Ping Temple. Chai Lai Orchid Elephant Sanctuary Experience the magic of interacting with elephants in an ethical and responsible way at the Chai Lai Orchid Elephant Sanctuary. Unlike traditional elephant tourism, where animals may be subject to mistreatment, Chai Lai Orchid focuses on conservation and the well-being of the elephants. Nestled in the lush jungles surrounding Chiang Mai, the Chai Lai Orchid Elephant Sanctuary is a sanctuary with a mission – to provide a haven for elephants rescued from exploitation and offer visitors an ethical and educational experience. Unlike some tourist-oriented elephant camps, Chai Lai Orchid prioritizes the well-being and natural behaviors of the elephants. Here, visitors have the opportunity to observe elephants in a natural environment, learn about their individual stories, and participate in activities that prioritize the animals’ welfare. Bathing elephants in the river, feeding them, and simply observing their interactions contribute to a meaningful and responsible encounter with these gentle giants. The sanctuary’s commitment to conservation, education, and sustainable practices makes it a must-visit for those seeking an ethical and compassionate elephant experience. Immerse Yourself in Night Markets Chiang Mai’s night markets are a sensory delight, offering a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and flavors. The Night Bazaar (this was wild, rows and rows of vendors and shops) is a bustling market where you can shop for local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. For a more relaxed atmosphere, the Sunday Walking Street Market in the Old City transforms the streets into a vibrant showcase of handmade goods, street performances, and delectable street food. These markets provide an excellent opportunity to experience the local culture and find unique treasures to take home. Culinary Adventure Chiang Mai is a paradise for food enthusiasts, offering a diverse array of culinary delights. Dive into the local street food scene and savor dishes like khao soi (a coconut curry noodle soup), pad Thai, mango sticky rice, and a variety of flavorful Thai curries. Explore the Warorot Market to sample an abundance of local snacks and fresh produce. For a more immersive experience, consider taking a cooking class to learn the art of Thai cuisine and bring a taste of Chiang Mai back to your home kitchen. For those with adventurous taste buds, explore the local markets to discover delicacies such as sai ua (northern Thai sausage) and gaeng hang lay (a flavorful pork curry). Don’t forget to indulge in fresh and exotic fruits like mangoes, lychees, and dragon fruit. Whether you’re savoring street food or dining in a traditional Thai restaurant, Chiang Mai promises a gastronomic journey that will leave you craving more. For me, I found my “go-to” spot called Caramellow Cafe! It has a diverse menu and great overall vibe! Great food, drinks, coffee and service! I can’t forget about the “diner-style” bakery & restaurant called Butter is Better Bakery! It was my other choice for some amazing western-style food and a good old cup of coffee! Big portions for breakfast and lots on the menu for each taste! Check them out on instagram and if you come through CM, you better stop in for a meal or at least a cup of coffee! Doi Suthep and Bhubing Palace A visit to Chiang Mai is incomplete without ascending the winding road to Doi Suthep, a mountain that offers breathtaking views of the city below. At the summit sits Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a revered temple adorned with golden spires and intricate carvings. The journey to the temple includes a staircase flanked by mythical serpents, adding to the mystical ambiance. Nearby, Bhubing Palace, the winter residence of the Thai royal family, welcomes visitors to explore its beautifully landscaped gardens and regal architecture.
